GTA 6’s gameplay reveal broke a streaming record, and also broke Twitch and Netflix

Rockstar Games managed to stop the digital world in its tracks this week as the first extended gameplay look at Grand Theft Auto 6 shattered streaming records and pushed major platforms to their absolute limits. According to data from Streams Charts, the event peaked at nearly four million concurrent viewers, comfortably claiming the title of the biggest gaming stream of 2026 so far. The sheer volume of interest eclipsed recent showcases from Nintendo and Sony, drawing millions across Twitch, YouTube, and Kick. Spanish creator IlloJuan emerged as the top voice of the evening, pulling in over two hundred thousand viewers on his own channel during the broadcast.

However, the massive influx of fans proved too much for the infrastructure supporting the launch. Both Netflix and Twitch suffered significant technical glitches under the weight of the demand, leaving many unlucky viewers locked out for nearly an hour. Cloudflare reported that Netflix traffic spiked by sixteen percent globally and surged by forty five percent in the United Kingdom alone. Even more staggering was the impact on Rockstar’s own official website, where global traffic climbed by one hundred seventy two percent, while UK visits skyrocketed by an unbelievable twelve hundred ten percent.

Despite the connectivity woes, the content itself sparked intense debate among those who managed to watch. The presentation detailed several overhauled systems including changes to how players commit carjackings and evade police, alongside a brand new romance mechanic within a sprawling open world. While most reactions remained neutral or positive, a vocal minority expressed skepticism toward the shift toward hyper realism over arcade fun. Some users even took to social media to vent their frustrations over potential pricing models, comparing it unfavorably to previous entries like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Behind the spectacle of high fidelity graphics and record breaking numbers lies a more complicated story at Rockstar Games. As fans count down to the November nineteenth release date on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, a shadow hangs over the celebration due to ongoing labor disputes. Dozens of former employees from Rockstar North are currently engaged in legal battles with the company via employment tribunals over allegations of union busting. It is a stark contrast between a project fueled by immense corporate investment and a workforce fighting for basic rights just as their creation captures the attention of millions.
