Honor Robot Phone Hands-On: A Gimbal Phone Experiment With Promising Results

In an era where content creators rely heavily on bulky external stabilizers, Honor is attempting a daring feat of engineering with its new Robot Phone. While the name suggests something out of a sci-fi novel, the device is essentially a high-end smartphone with a miniature gimbal integrated directly into its chassis. By developing a custom 2.6 gram motor, Honor has managed to tuck a three axis stabilization system inside a compartment on the back of the phone, eliminating the need for cumbersome peripherals and offering a seamless transition from standard photography to cinematic videography.

Hands-on testing reveals that the hardware is surprisingly capable despite its size. To activate the system, users slide open a manual cover and trigger the mechanism via software, allowing the tiny arm to unfold and stabilize a massive 200 megapixel primary sensor. During tests at London’s Kings Cross station, the super steady mode proved remarkably effective, keeping footage level even during erratic movement. Beyond simple stability, the integration allows for advanced tricks like 180 degree spin shots and the ability to record horizontal video while holding the device vertically, bridging the gap between a handheld mobile experience and professional gear.

Honor hasn’t stopped at hardware innovation; they have partnered with cinema giant ARRI to refine the software side of things. The phone supports LogC3 format and customizable LUTs, giving editors significantly more flexibility in post production than typical smartphone footage allow. Users can also control tracking speeds through an on screen joystick or utilize AI to follow specific subjects. While there is a slight learning curve regarding how the autofocus prioritizes targets, the overall utility of having such powerful tools available instantly in your pocket is undeniable.

Despite these promising results, accessibility remains a major hurdle. Currently launching exclusively in China as a limited production run proof of concept, the Robot Phone carries a steep price tag of approximately 1500 dollars. Potential buyers must also weigh the convenience against long term durability concerns, as adding intricate mechanical moving parts naturally increases the risk of failure over time. For now, it serves as an expensive yet exhilarating glimpse into the future of mobile cinematography, leaving many to wonder if this miniaturized tech will eventually migrate into global markets or evolve into its own dedicated category of devices.
