Obama strategist turns on rising Dem star over viral Trump attack: ‘Gratuitous and unnecessary’

A rift is forming within the Democratic party as David Axelrod, a veteran strategist and former senior advisor to Barack Obama, has publicly criticized Senator Jon Ossoff for recent comments targeting Donald Trump. The friction began after Ossoff delivered a fiery campaign speech that quickly went viral, in which he blasted the president for neglecting his duties while focusing on luxury travels and personal projects. While the bulk of the critique focused on policy and leadership, Ossoff specifically mentioned Natalie Harp, the president’s executive assistant, referring to her presence on what he termed a flying palace gifted by the Emir of Qatar.

Axelrod took to social media to express his disapproval, arguing that while most of the speech was an eloquent and brutal takedown, the specific mention of Harp was gratuitous and unnecessary. According to Axelrod, including a staff member in the fray may have pleased certain segments of the Democratic base who enjoy seeing Trump receive a dose of his own aggressive rhetoric, but it ultimately detracted from the core strength of Ossoff’s political message. He suggested that the campaign might have intentionally leaned into the controversy to juice its virality across digital platforms.

The criticism provided an unexpected point of agreement between Axelrod and Ossoff’s Republican opponent, Representative Mike Collins. Collins described the attack on a young female staffer as disgusting and unbecoming of a United States Senator, suggesting that even members of Ossoff’s own party recognize when a line has been crossed. However, not everyone in the Democratic camp shares this view. Some supporters have pushed back against Axelrod’s traditional approach to campaigning, claiming that politics has evolved and that adhering to antiquated rules will only lead to electoral losses.

For his part, Senator Ossoff appears unfazed by the backlash from either side of the aisle or from within his own party ranks. During a recent television appearance, he dismissed concerns regarding Harp’s feelings by reminding critics that White House staffers are powerful public officials paid by taxpayers. As Donald Trump responded with personal insults calling him a Pee-wee Herman look-alike, Ossoff claimed it has been amazing to watch the administration melt down over several days of scrutiny.
