A weekend of planned excitement turned into a tragedy on Friday when two seasoned skydivers died following a midair collision during an organized event in Southern California. The incident took place at Skydive Elsinore, a long established facility situated between the major hubs of Los Angeles and San Diego. According to officials, both individuals were licensed professionals visiting from out of town specifically to participate in the group gathering.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of an air emergency late Friday morning. While initial reports indicated that the jump began without issue, including a standard free fall and successful parachute deployments, disaster struck just moments before touchdown. Company representatives stated that the divers collided roughly 150 feet above the earth, causing their canopies to become hopelessly entangled.
Emergency crews rushed the victims to a nearby hospital where they were treated for critical injuries, though neither survived. In a formal statement released after the crash, Skydive Elsinore clarified that there was no evidence suggesting any equipment failure played a role in the accident. Investigators continue to look into the specifics of how the two experienced jumpers ended up in each other’s flight paths so close to the landing zone.
