A celebratory birthday gathering turned into a scene of chaos early Sunday morning when eleven teenagers were shot during a confrontation at Carolyn Crayton Park in Macon, Georgia. According to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, the violence erupted around midnight after a large group of young people converged on the park. Among those injured were six 18 year olds and five 17 year olds, with two victims currently fighting for their lives in critical condition while the remaining nine are listed as stable.
The tragedy began unexpectedly after the party guests were forced to relocate. Sheriff David Davis explained that the celebration was originally hosted at an Airbnb in neighboring Jones County, but the occupants were asked to leave the property by the host. This led the group, which included several students from Northeast and Central High Schools, to move their festivities to the public park where they eventually encountered another group of individuals.
Authorities say what started as a verbal disagreement quickly spiraled out of control, resulting in a barrage of gunfire that targeted members of the birthday party. During a press conference, Sheriff Davis expressed shock at the scale of the attack, noting that he could not recall a recent instance where so many people were shot simultaneously in a single event.
As of now, no suspects have been taken into custody and investigators are working to piece together exactly who opened fire. Due to the high number of casualties, the FBI has stepped in to assist local law enforcement with the probe. Despite federal involvement, officials believe the conflict was likely localized rather than linked to any larger criminal organization.
