Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd detail relationship in new UConn documentary

Fans of UConn basketball are getting an intimate look behind the curtain of the Huskies dynasty in a new Apple TV docuseries debuting this Friday. While the first two installments focus on the historical climb of the program, the finale shifts its lens toward the emotional turbulence of the 2024-25 season. The episode highlights a surprisingly strained relationship between star player Paige Bueckers and legendary coach Geno Auriemma, revealing a period where the two did not speak for weeks following a devastating film session after a loss to Tennessee.

In the documentary, Bueckers opens up about the psychological toll of Auriemma’s coaching style, noting that being compared to icons like Diana Taurasi felt exhausting and at times led her to question whether she even wanted to remain at UConn. According to director Matthew Hamachek, seeing Bueckers navigate such raw, human struggle amidst the glare of national championships adds a layer of vulnerability to her legacy. He noted that Bueckers chose to be honest about these hardships so young athletes wouldn’t simply see the trophies and confetti, but would understand how grueling the process actually is.

Throughout these trials, Bueckers found solace in her teammate and partner, Azzi Fudd. The pair used the series to formally address their romantic relationship, which they describe as having been known to those close to them but kept intentionally private from the general public. Fudd recalled supporting Bueckers during her clashes with Auriemma, arguing that too much blame was often placed on Bueckers when things went wrong on the court. Their bond provided a necessary sanctuary during a high-pressure environment that nearly drove Bueckers to quit before they eventually secured their twelfth national championship together.

The connection between the two stars extended well beyond Storrs and into their professional careers. After Bueckers was taken number one overall by the Dallas Wings, Fudd followed suit as a top pick a year later, reuniting them in Texas. Despite attempts by team spokespeople to deflect questions about their personal lives during introductory press conferences, both have now flourished in the WNBA. With Bueckers posting elite numbers and Fudd establishing herself as one of the league’s premier shooters, their partnership remains as strong on and off the court as it was during their collegiate run.
